Hello Treadmill

Two days in a row on the hamster wheel and not yet sick of it! I'm thinking I should have done the indoor uphill interval training before the New York Marathon.  When I have time I'll blog about it.

Thanks to Hepstrack.com for their Ivy League Championships revival, I now have a YouTube channel.

Running Off Memphis

Great times in Memphis last weekend, but that didn't translate to much running.  Aside from a little five mile jaunt on Friday, I didn't run at all this weekend.  What I lacked in running I made up for in seafood gumbo and southern bbq.  So while I had a long run blocked off for today, I was feeling a little "heavier" when I got going.

Goal for today was 20 miles, and I only ended up going about 18.5 in 2:03 (about 6:29 average).  My hip flexors were a little tight, and my right heel and calf still has something going on so I didn't want to push it too much.  I finally made it to the North end of the Lakeshore path though, and I ran off my Memphis lbs.

19 miles...

Thought I'd be sore yesterday after my 10k, but I guess I wasn't THAT sore.  Goal yesterday was to run 18 miles or minimum 2 hours, depending on how I felt, and the weather was perfect for it - 55 and light rain.  Since it felt so easy, and the pace kept escalating, I ended up going 19 in 2 hours (average about 6:21 per mile.  I thought the Garmin output was pretty cool, so I'm pasting that in instead of blogging more.

Chicago Race for the Cure

Despite losing my voice I woke up this morning for the Chicago Race for the Cure 10k.  No one really showed up, but didn't matter, I just wanted to use this as a tempo run and make-up for a piss-poor showing at the Chicago Half two weeks ago. Much better showing this time--I won the race in 35:05, ran near perfectly even mile splits (5:38, 5:39, 5:39, 5:45, 5:35, 5:39, 75), and felt pretty comfortable the whole way. Starting really long runs tomorrow, hopefully 18, and 6 weeks til race day.

Wanted to get back in great shape in my 5 weeks off between work and school.  Not in great shape yet but getting there.  Last five weeks mileage as follows: 40, 14, 52, 37, 52, 61... not bad and dropped 10 pounds in the process.

Easy with Company

Finally got off work in time to catch the Central Park Track Club track workout at the East River Track.  I assumed there would be a few guys there who could run fast, and I was right enough.  It's just over 2 miles from my apartment to the track, so that made for a nice warm up.  The four doughnut holes at 4pm didn't help, but oh well, there's a bathroom at the track.

Today's workout was 4x1000, 3x300 at the track, with 400m recovery (2:30ish).  I kept the trainers on because I'm a bit fat and slow right now, and really, what's the point except to get a good workout in.  To my surprise, I was able to run 3:05 (4:56 pace) very comfortably for the first 3 reps, then went down to 3:02 for the last one.  Who knew.  My 300's were 52, 49, 49, which isn't bad considering I haven't run fast for a while.  The more obvious realization, was that I run much better when I have other people to help pace me, and sure enough, by the 2nd half of the workout, I got competitive and started running faster.  Total for the day was 9 quality miles, first time in a long time.

The Summer Intern Marathon Training Plan...

Means I only run on the weekends now, with a 4-5 miler sprinkled in somewhere during the week.  I managed to squeeze in 4 miles on Thursday, but needed to get a workout in today, so I ran down to the track on the east river for some 1000m intervals.  It's a shit track with some minor undulations and horrible drainage, but it gets the job done, and most importantly has a water fountain next to the finish line.  I haven't busted out the racing flats for these workouts because what's the point, I don't care about running that fast right now in June, plus, it's nice knowing if I put on racing shoes I'd be 1-2 seconds faster per lap.  I managed to bang out 5 x 1000 with 3 min/1 lap jog for recovery in 3:06, 3:08, 3:04, 3:07, 3:06, which is about 5 minute mile pace.  I was debating doing a few more but started getting a little tired so just jogged home.  3 mile warm-up, 3 and change cool down, about 10.5 miles for the day.

I also didn't log my workout last weekend: 4 x mile with 3 min recovery in 5:18, 5:17, 5:13, 5:10.  Not full effort, but I'm trying to keep my strength up through the summer and then make a last push for the NYC marathon.

Soldier Field 10-mile

I freaking rocked it today.  Normally I don't come away from races feeling this good about my run, especially when I'm hoping to be in the money and finish 9th, but I seriously don't think I could have gotten any more out of that run.  10 miles, 53:01, 5:18 average per mile, near perfect mile splits, PR by almost a minute, all while living the Booth life. I should mention when I ran my half marathon PR last September, I averaged 5:24 per mile, and weighed about 10 pounds less than I do now.

Today's course headed south from Soldier Field for 10 miles, then flipped and come back north along the same path.  I was a little worried, because normally the wind blows south on Lakeshore, so I expected a tailwind on the way out and headwind coming home.  Today the winds blew the opposite direction.  Add in 55 degree overcast weather and we had perfect racing conditions. I went out pretty hard, and after an opening mile in 5:18, I found myself just behind a pack of 4 in around 10th place.  It was a little faster than I wanted to go out, and I didn't feel that springy, but decided the best thing I could do was latch on to these guys and have them block the wind for me for the next four miles. If it meant a slightly faster than comfortable pace so be it.

This ended up being a make or break moment.  If I didn't go with these guys, there's no way I would have kept my pace running into the wind, and would have been much more tired, but I still wasn't confident I could run sub-5:20's for 10 miles.  It was a big risk to take a mile into the race but it paid off big time.  I hung on to them until the turnaround and then they dropped me.  I immediately expected my pace would slow and I would slip down to 5:40's or something in that range, but with the tailwind pushing me home I actually ended up negative splitting the race, and ran 53:01 (26:40, 26:21).  It's crazy because six weeks ago I couldn't break 27 minutes for an 8k and I just ran two back-to-back in well under that time.  I'm not sure how I ran this fast given I'm still weighing in at 200 pounds and could be eating better.

This race does give me hope for the fall, since I will not be running much for the next 10 weeks with my internship in New York.  I'll have 12 weeks to get ready for the NYC marathon, and it appears that should be plenty of time to get in shape for a PR.

My splits today: 5:18, 5:19, 5:18, 5:19, 5:24, 5:16, 5:19, 5:16, 5:15, 5:14.

5/30 update: went for a run this morning and my legs felt like jello.  They haven't been this drained in a while, so definitely pleased with the effort.

Quarters

Short and Sweet today:

8 x 400 meters with 1 minute recovery:
70, 68, 68, 69, 68, 67, 66, 66
2 mile warm-up and cool-down, good for 6 decent miles today.  Legs and arms a little sore from core-work yesterday, but got through it nicely. Felt good to get some lactic acid build-up.

Food-wise I've gotten in the habit of eating a chocolate chip muffin and breakfast burrito when I get to campus on Tuesdays, and so far it has yielded decent results, so I'll temporarily stick to the unhealthy stuff until I learn my lesson.  Magic Shoe 5k on Saturday, Soldier Field 10-miler next weekend.

Two More Spring Races

I just started reading Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.  Considering my hobbies, I'm a little late to the game on this one, but I'm already loving it.

Some great quotes from the opening pages:
"In terms of stress relief and sensual pleasure, running is what you have in your life before you have sex.  The equipment and desire come factory installed; all you have to do is let 'er rip and hang on for the ride."

"There's something so universal about the sensation, the way running unites our two most primal impulses: fear and pleasure.  We run when we are scared, we run when we are ecstatic, we run away from our problems and run around for a good time."

On a related note I've run 50 miles in the last six days and feel myself rounding into form for next weekend at Magic Shoe in Newport Beach and then hopefully for the Soldier Field 10 miler on Memorial Day weekend. On Tuesday I hit the track with Josh Perry and did 2xmile, 2x800 (4:58, 4:57, 2:28, 2:22), while Josh ran 400's on alternating laps with me.  I'm hoping for a 10-mile PR.  Technically I've never run a 10 mile race so anything will be a PR, but I think I came through 10 miles in around 53:50 during my half marathon last September, so we'll call anything under 54 minutes a PR.

Nashville Country Music Half Marathon

We had a great road trip down to Nashville this weekend. Nacho AC represented at the Country Music Half Marathon (me, Betsy, Caroline, Heather, Holly, Shreena, Nicole, Karah all ran). We didn't get settled until about 5pm on Friday, but after sitting in a car for 8 hours I felt I need to shakeout, so I went for a somewhat hilly 5-mile run, which may have been too much, but who knows. Had to settle for turkey and swiss dry at Arby's on the way down because there are no healthy quick serve stops in the south. We had a good "pasta dinner" at an Italian restaurant down the street, plus a glass of wine, figured it's all for good times and didn't think I would run that fast anyways.

I woke up at 5:30 a.m and took the customary 20 minute hot shower to loosen up my legs, then had a banana and bagel for breakfast. After the team photo I warmed-up for a mile and headed to the start. I wanted to keep it as conservative as possible because I wasn't expecting much better than 1:15 given my fitness and the rumored hills. I had glanced at the elevation profile the night before and the hills looked nasty, down 150 feet over the first two miles, then net 250 foot gain over the next four miles, followed by 6-7 miles of downhill, plus a nasty climb during mile 13. I was real safe over the first couple miles, hitting 5:35 and 5:33 before starting my climb. (My target pace was about 5:45 but considering the downhill this was perfect).

I got back on pace during the climb and as I started back uphill I estimated I was in around 7-10th place and figured I'd stay there for now. I didn't know my place because we started next to the marathon and there were some marathoners in front of me. I passed a couple guys on the climb but tried to stay patient and wait for the downhill. Once we were at peak elevation (around 10k - 34:30ish) I allowed myself to accelerate with the downhill and started picking people off. The next three miles I averaged around 5:25 and moved up into 3-4th by 9 miles. I didn't know my place at the time, but there were still a couple people in sight so I gradually worked up toward them. By mile 11 I had passed everyone within sight and just had a cyclist along side of me, plus a 10 second cushion on the guy behind me. Finally after 12 miles I felt ready to bonk, and had one last 75 foot climb before the downhill finish. Luckily I got through that fine and kicked to the finish. It wasn't until I crossed the line that someone told me I got 2nd place, and a better-than-expected time of 1:13:34. I definitely surprised myself. Sometimes all you need to do is get the competitive juices flowing to see a great result and that definitely happened for me yesterday.

Splits as follows: 5:35, 5:33, 5:46, 5:43, 5:43, 5:24, 5:30, 5:41, 5:19, 5:28, 5:35, 5:50, 5:45, 33.
1:13:34

I caught up with Ryan Hall at the Nissan expo after the race and briefly reminisced about high school (Al Bundy, four touchdowns, 1 game ;). Later, I got an invite to the VIP expo for the awards ceremony (free food and beer), as well as VIP passes to the Patron Platinum Club and backstage access for the Montgomery Gentry concert for me and the girls. A pleasant and unexpected surprise to the great result. My PR team and I hit the town after the concert and they tried to get me on stage with a house band, but a little too late. Bummer because I definitely would have milked that one.

Great weekend... benefit of 5 straight 45-mile weeks.

Transitions

Chicago Winter - 1, Josh - 0

While it wasn't that cold, winter completely killed any training regimen I hoped to be on. Between that, recruiting, and some personal issues with my friend Julie as well as some lady drama, my head just wasn't in it. I still managed to hover around 20-25 miles per week, but that was only good enough to keep my weight just over 200 lbs. Also, there aren't any races in Chicago during the winter, so I really had nothing to be motivated for. It all culminated with a crazy week in Cabo, where I ran once, and had fun the rest of the time. Plus the fear of being shot while off the property was enough to keep me from going rogue. I returned from Cabo feeling more out of shape than at any point in the last several years. With five weeks to get ready for the Nashville 1/2, I finally found some motivation to string some legitimate training together.

Fast-forward five weeks and I'm on pace for my 5th consecutive 45-mile week heading into my race this weekend. It's warm enough for me to hit the track after my Tuesday morning class so I've been logging some serious track workouts. Last Thursday I banged out a 1600, 4x800 workout in 4:49, 2:24, 2:21, 2:20, 2:19-very encouraging to be entirely under 4:50 pace for the workout. On Sunday, I hit the roads for a 2x2mile (11:05, 11:04), and yesterday tuned up for the race with 1600, 3x800 (5:00, 2:28, 2:25, 2:22) followed by some soccer (scored 3 goals!, strained glute-feeling better).

The other motivation for getting the miles up are the recent developments in my personal life. A couple weeks ago I decided to end my two-year relationship (long-distance is tough). Two things have helped me get through this: my friends/family (who have been amazing), and running. I often do my best thinking while running, but sometimes it's also my greatest release. The weekend after my break-up I ran 21 (fast) miles and barely felt it. Running became an hour-long meditation. Any time I felt stressed or sad I hit the pavement, and each time my runner's high lifted my spirits. This release has really fueled me over the past couple weeks and my fitness is at another level because of it. I don't need to use running as an outlet anymore, but in times like these I'm grateful it's a part of who I am.

I'm still not physically where I'd like to be, but I'm on my way back. I'm going to lose most of my fitness when I start my internship at Credit Suisse, but I'll do my best to get long runs in on the weekends. The New York City Marathon awaits in November. I'll blog a bit more frequently too.

An actual week of training

It pains me to say I am actually getting comfortable running on treadmills. Hopefully this trend doesn't persist for too long. After my 6-miler on Monday, I ran 5, 5, and 4 miles on the treadmill Wednesday through Friday, for 28 miles this week. It feels nice to put together an entire week of work. On Tuesday morning, in lieu of a run, I played basketball for about 2 hours so I got some work in. Additionally, after my 5-mile run at Lakeshore Athletic Club, I jumped in the pool for a light 1000 yard swim workout (400 yds of drills and warm-up, followed by 3 x 200 yard @ 3:00-3:05). I'm hoping to continue this next week, and keep my body active, but having an internship locked up definitely makes it easier.

Aside from that, I'm noticing some left hip tightness so I need to work on that, and my knees are a little sore, so I need to get on the ice. I'm foam rolling every day, which has made for good maintenance, so hopefully my body holds up as I get back in shape. The good news for me is my weight didn't blow up too bad in the 3 months where I barely ran, and I'm hovering between 196-200 lbs right now (probably 10 pounds above marathon weight).

Last run outside before Snowpocalypse

Happy Birthday Rachel Yelsey!!

On a separate note, it's snowing like crazy right now, so I decided that despite the cold I would take this opportunity to squeeze in one last run outside before the storm hit. It was probably about 20 degrees today, with and accuweather said windchill made it feel like 5, so that was nice. I wore the fleece-lined tights, and then some thermal/clima-cool stuff I had left over from college, a fleece cap, gloves and sun-glasses. The few runs I have done a long the lake have reminded me how important the glasses are. The wind rips off the lake and you will get massive windburn if you don't cover your face as much as possible. Total today was 40 minutes, 6 miles. (also did 8 miles on Saturday!)

I finally have a race to train for. I am entered in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in April, and may run the Nashville 1/2 marathon with some Boothies, so at least its motivation to get in shape.
